Duke Energy has laid off at least a half dozen workers, Newsline has confirmed, although the company has not specified how many employees are affected nor their job descriptions.

In response to a Newsline inquiry, utility spokesperson Shawna Berger issued a statement: “Duke Energy is entering the next phase of its clean energy transition, which calls for a transformative expansion and modernization of our energy generation and grid. In preparation, we are reorganizing for greater efficiency and cost effectiveness to deliver smarter energy solutions that are affordable, reliable and cleaner for our customers and communities. As a result, we expect limited workforce impacts across our service territories.”

Nationwide, Duke Energy employed 27,859 people in 2022, according to Statista. That’s slightly more than in 2021, but down from 30,083 in 2018.

The company is scheduled to release its revised load forecast next week.

Duke Energy stock is trading at $95.65 a share today; its share price has decreased since Jan. 8, when it was nearly $100.
